Southwest Airlines is changing its seating policy for plus-size passengers. Starting January 27, 2026, passengers who take up space in the neighboring seat will have to buy an extra ticket - and it might not be refunded. The current rules allow flyers to buy an extra seat ahead of time and get refunded later -- or request an extra seat at no charge at the airport.

Southwest Airlines will soon require travelers who don't fit within the armrests of their seat to pay for an extra one in advance. Currently, plus-size passengers can either pay for an extra seat in advance with the option of getting that money back later or they can request a free extra seat at the airport. Under the carrier's new policy, a refund is still possible, but no longer guaranteed. CBS News' @Shanelle Kaul breaks down the airline's new policy, which begins Jan. 27, 2026. #news #southw

Outside of the fact that this was handled absolutely unprofessionally with no type of organization or true guidelines .. my main worry is that this policy can be used and abused towards black women as a whole. ##southwestairlines##plussize##fyp
