Earth's magnetic field may be able to protect NASA’s moon base from galactic cosmic rays
A research paper described a region between Earth and the Moon where cosmic rays are deflected by our planet's magnetic field.
NASA plans to return humans to the moon for the first time since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. The goal is to land astronauts back on the lunar surface, with a longer-term vision of establishing a permanent base on the moon that can be used as a stepping-stone for future crewed missions to Mars and beyond.
NASA said an X-class solar flare is not currently expected to affect the Artemis II mission, while weather on Earth looks favorable for a smooth launch.
"NASA Earth Science is a perfect fit for SCEMFIS' mission, which is identifying and supporting the latest breakthroughs in marine science," said Dr. Eric Powell of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory at the University of Southern Mississippi, and the Director of SCEMFIS.
On March 31, 2026, Earth will witness three near-Earth asteroid flybys. From a 36-foot bus-sized rock to a 72-foot airplane-sized giant, NASA is keeping a track on these three asteroids, thought they possess no danger to Earth.
