A strike that ground the Long Island Rail Road, the nation's busiest commuter rail system, to a halt for the past three days ended Monday night as the MTA and representatives of five unions representing half of the system's workforce came to an agreement,
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said the strike will officially end at midnight and will begin preparations for Tuesday's resumption of service.
Five LIRR unions representing the striking transit workers did not reach a deal with the MTA in time to ensure the railroad could run service on Tuesday morning.
The strike stemmed from a four-year contract. The MTA and unions agreed to the terms of the first three years, but disputes arose about the final year.
